Altering a Squat Suit

I compete in the USAPL, where it is illegal to use a squat suit with adjustable straps, for those who don't know. Therefore, my straps need drastically tightened, in order for me to get the most out of it.

That said, I'm wondering if there are any other ways to have this done, other than to pinch the material directly above my traps and then sew that portion together. For instance, can I pinch the material anywhere along the strap line...should I cut the straps, remove the excess material and then have them re-sewed...etc. Any suggestions, comments would be helpful.
