Nick, I'm also 51 years old. I've been competing for about 3-4 years now. I found that "being older" I can't handle two bench workouts/week. I used to do a "speed" bench & then ME bench later in the week. Had to cut out the speed bench due to overtraining. Now I just do an ME bench day and later a "support day" when I work on lockout & tri's. Make sure you get enough protein. Basically if you are sore going into a workout, skip it or you will be overtraining. Also make sure you work your rotator cuff muscles. You can damage them very easily if they are not properly warmup up prior to benching heavy weights.

What federation are you going to lift in? If they allow shirts, get one. Your shoulders will really appreciate it. No sense taking a knife to a gun fight. Good luck.
