I'm an old fart, too (59), and I've found reps to be safer. Not only that, I feel like I've DONE something after a lot of reps and I don't feel like I've worked my muscles with heavier weights (I've only hurt them, or the joints).
I knew a guy with a tremendous physique who told me "If you can't lift it 12 times, it's too heavy." So his magic "rep" number was 12.
One thing I've found is that breathing betwen reps is really important so that the blood pressure doesn't spike. Unfortunately, breathing seems to take my power away somewhat. But that's OK. I was doing reps of military press a few months ago, holding my breath, and actually got a black eye--busted a vessel in my eyelid. That's a little scary, because it could have been in my brain, and I might have started voting Democrat. (:-)
