Yes,, squats and deadlfits will definitely do it. You may also add some heavy bentover barbell rows. Just start all these with lighter weight at first and really concentrate on form. and by eventually getting up to heavy weights with five reps-not going lower than five reps helps you keep your form intact.
When I added these lifts anhd began using a 5x5 routine along with increased protein/whey protein I gained 25 pounds--of course it isn't all muscle. I had been doing some strenuous grappling and boxing workouts but even though I was in shape that way I felt weak. So once I stopped thoses workouts(my partner moved out of the area) I decided to gain somje strength and hit the weights in a new way- 5x5 with compound lifts. I have decent definition from my older workouts and have maintained some of that evn thought I gained weight but I.m going for strenght at this point--it all depends what you want and finding a happy medium.
