Yes they do, but the fact that you can lift the weight is the proof that the muscles are getting stronger. Most bodybuilders cringe at a powerlifters form in benching, we bring the bar lower on our chest, we keep our elbows in, we arch, we do whatever it takes to lift the maximum amount, a bench workout is a bench workout not a chest workout. Same thing with squats, powerlifters realize squats are more about you posterior chain, or your muscles on your back, hammies, glutes, lower back, but this is to get max weights. Where as for bodybuilders they utilize squats to hit their quads.

The most important thing in powerlifting is that the bar moves. If you reach a plateu then you need to look at why, maybe you need to change your form, change your workout or whatever it takes to get stronger.
