Most olympic bars I have used(York, Elecko(sp?), Maverick) have always had better bearings than any power bar I have used. The reason is that the bar needs to be able to "spin" free of the weights so when you do a squat style snatch or squat style clean you are actually "pulling" yourself under the bar into the receiving position to rack the weight just before dropping into a full squat. I try to do some form of olympic lift at least once a week. Usually power snatches or power cleans. My knees are not too forgiving to do full squat olympic lifts anymore. Haven't lifted in an olympic meet in about 10 years. The last one I did I managed a 209 snatch and a 264 clean and jerk using the old split syle(165 weight class). At first, train the clean and jerk seperate. Jerk out of the rack. Then you can add things like, front squat followed by a jerk, overhead snatch squats(my old favorite) pulls from different heights. Always use fairly light weights(50-75%) and low reps(3-5/set). You are training to explode, not for endurance. I cringe when I see workouts with sets of 10 in the power clean ect.. Use a hook grip. Tape the thumb and chalk up. I have torn flesh off the thumb before, sucks. Olympic lifts will make you quicker and faster for track and field events, I'm not sure of the exact advantage a powerlifter would have besides explosiveness and maybe increased flexibilty. I will tell you one thing though, some of the best squatters I have ever seen were olympic lifters devoid of all gear.
