James:
A minor correction...'press out' in the quick lifts was never 'legal'; however it was often overlooked and forgiven during the performance of the lifts. When you watch old lifting films you will note how many of the lifters had significant press out in the snatch. This was more in the era of the split style, where the lifter eased under the bar more so than in the squat technique.
The 1972 regulation has been overly enforced, as are so many arcane rulings. In '73 there was a big crackdown on dropping the barbell. At the Seniors that year, a couple of perfectly good lifts were ruled out because the competitors released a hand from the barbell before it hit the ground. I recall Fred Lowe making a great snatch and then having three red lights come on...to the astonishment of everyone. Same thing happened to Dan Cantore, the eventual 148 class winner.
Sometimes the judges have to give the benefit of the doubt to the athlete and not be overly zealous with minor infractions.
