I seem to remember him having an ankle injury (possibly swollen and/or sprained), On at least one of his failed clean attempts he shoved away some handlers who tried to help him up. His determination in front of his home country crowd was just not to be denied. I believe it took his third attempt C&J to win the contest.

I was lifting in a meet at the time at a local YMCA (Oakland?). The Moscow Worlds was on television during our meet and was being shown in the Y's lobby on TV. I ran into the lobby to watch him in between my attmepts.I think the C&J in question was around 212.5 kgs. Very inspiring and memorable.
