I am in the process of training a young man who has signed with Columbia Univerity as a left tackle. I just reviewed his program sent by their sports performance coach and he states that if the player feels comfortable with his now strength coach, the player can use some of the lifts already being performed.
My question and thoughts to one of the Columbia sports performance coach exercises that was included for lifts to be accustomed to when arriving this summer.
The lift in question?.......A dumbell shrug with a calf raise. I feel that since most young high school players don't have knowledgable strength coaches, the Columbia coach is wanting his player to learn the power pull with a strong explosive shrug, which I am installing. Either from the floor or the blocks from a hang position using a barbell instead of dumbells. Your thoughts? This young man is a blue chipper. 6'6" and 277 bodyweight. We start the program this sunday. All the other lifts I can relate to but, need your thoughts in using power pulls instead of dumbells with a calf raise.
