Hi Alex:

I terms of the footage of modern elite lifters, there is plenty at Lift Up (there is a long scroll menu divided by decades in the Clip-O-Rama) or You Tube.

Of course, technique of lifting was changing along with the rules of lifting. In the times of Novak, Davis and Stanczyk, contact between the bar and the body of athlete wasn't allowed - no brushes, no catapulting of the weight from the hips or so.

Besides classic techniques, it's interesting how some styles faded away (split snatch or split clean) and some suddenly got so many followers (non-split jerks - full-squat jerks, push jerksr) though the decades of this sport development.

Those are kinda obvious observations. Personally, I think choice of the best technicians is very individual and most of the time it will be the best technicians of the time you were learning the lifts and when you competed yourself. For example, you mention modern Kakhiasvilis, Ilin, Aryamnov and I bet they will be your heroes 20 years from now too. I lifted in the 1980s and to me the best technicians were Pisarenko, Pervy, Rusev, Osmanaliev, Rigert...

Of course, this theory of mine doesn't work all the time. I remember I used to consider Sultan Rakhmanov to be super snatch technicians and I was a bit disappointed when I watched his snatch @ 1980 Olympics:

He just almost power snatches huge weights... Oh well, as we used to say in Russian, "the trees are always big when you are a kid" :-)
