In almost every other sport there is a possibility of future dollars (no matter how small, but try to tell that to a parent that thinks little Johnny will be striking out Pujols). While our athletes work at Home Depot (I seem to remember this from the last Olympics).
This kind of gets back to an earlier thread, but its marketing I don't know that Apolo Ohno is going to make the big bucks as a speed skater but because he and the rest of the team did so well in the last Olympics (AND THEY WERE GIVEN MAJOR TV TIME), I am sure speed skating coaches saw an increase in students (and maybe now in dance classes too).
I dont think the normal everyday person could name ONE weightlifter from anytime in the past let alone from the last Olympics. Personally I could only name a few until I started coaching weightlifting, and I am kind of a nut when the Olympics are on trying to watch every sport I can.
Last note which now that I think about it really makes me crazy, right before the last Winter Olympics I remember watching CURLING on NBC for a few Saturdays in a row, CURLING!!! Are there even a dozen "stone sliders" in the USA???
If they are willing to put curling on they must have never even heard of WEIGHTLIFTING.

Whew, sorry if this rambles to much, but my guess is many others have similar feelings.

Dennis
