Jim,
I had 2 sets of cortisone shots last year, for herniated discs in L4-L5 and L5-S1. The inflammation was causing constant shooting pain down my left leg. For me, they helped out, but as others mentioned they are not cheap. My doctor first had me try some oral cortisone (prednisolone - copay $5) to see if that would settle things down. You might even want to investigate getting some sort of inversion machine to hang upside down on and take a little load off your back and spine. That would be cheaper than the cortisone shots for most people.
My lifting hasn't been affected by this problem, but I would recommend being very cautious when starting any relatively new physical activity. My flareups have been because I got too eager to learn a skateboard trick, or to get back to playing basketball after taking a few years off. And of course, keep the core nice and strong.
