There is much overlap in the following terms/areas. This adds to the public's confusion, as there is great interchangeability in all these areas.
The thing that is common to all of these is that the use of the BARBELL is pretty much at the core..For example,, one can practice the Olympic Lifts or power lifts to help almost any sport (football, track&field etc) or use them for bodybuilding etc.
Here are some terms that people get confused about:
weight training = the lifting of weights, primarily barbells & dumbells, for sports, health, strength, re-hab, bodysculpting or fitness that also includes using various progressive-resistance & exercise apparatui. (this is like a catch-all)
weight lifting (two words) = the practice of lifting weights, primarily dumbells, barbells and/or other heavy weight objects/implements for sports, fun, fitness or strongman/woman type competitions
Powerlifting = the practice, training and the competition in the sport of the 3 so-called, Power lifts, ( the bench press, the squat, the deadlift) using a barbell
Bodybuilding = the training of one's body using barbells, dumbells, various progressive-resistance apparatui, aerobics via various exercise protocols to sculpt one's body for fun and/or competition; primarily by adding muscle mass thru the use of barbells and dumbells
Weightlifting (one word) = the practice, training and the competition of the only strength/power- Olympic sport; has 2 disciplines/events (the Snatch, the Clean&Jerk), using an Olympic Barbell.
