In Response To: Re: New Research (Or Conspiracy?!): Multivitamins (Scott Tusic)

My first and customary inclination is against the incompetent boobs in governments to get involved in my life and what I do with it. I definitely believe that many supplements can be dosed and used safely by lay people. There are some, however that can be very dangerous. Could it be appropriate to have reasonable regulatory safeguards in those cases?

I used to work for a sports nutrition company. I very quickly learned that there is a wildly varying range of ethical behavior in the industry. Some companies cheat the customer out of the stated amount of active ingredients. Some make claims that are unfounded. Some 'spike' their products. Some have quality control so bad that toxic substances end up in products. It is these kinds of companies that are causing the problem and the attention from the government.

I made a recommendation that our company take the lead in forming a self-regulatory organization that would be a kind of industry-wide, neutral, quality and safety assurance for the consumer. I thought this would be a great promotion for the company and industry, while staving off what I saw as an increasing amount of interest among politicos to enact government control. My company didn't seem to give a crap.

Unless the supplement industry gets its act together, the 'bad guys' are going to make it a 'slam dunk' for the parasites in Congress to use this issue to create yet more intrusion into our freedom and liberty.
