lower back strengthening

How do weightlifters build mass on the lower back? I really do mean bodybuilding style - I would like some slabs of muscle there. However, I don't want it to screw up weightlifting. Hence I would rather not do conventional deads. I do my RDLs and GMs weightlifting style (explosive with good positions). I don't think either really help build mass (i stick with fast triples). I was considering doing barbell hypers and sumo deads in 5-10 rep range. Any other ideas?
