Here is my brief report on the meet. I am still very new to the weightlifting game and I am still meeting a lot of people. I met Regis Becker and John Bologna at the meet. Great people. Regis was very busy with coaching and then competing. He had to coach the last lifter in the 85-94kg session and then was one of the first competitors in the 105-105+kg session. I am not sure how he lifted, but I know he was running around like a mad man fulfilling all his duties!
I coached 2 athletes. 1 did really well and 1 didn't. The 69kg lifter PR'd in the CJ and attempted a PR in the snatch but missed it out front. He earned a bronze. The 62kg lifter bombed the snatch and that was my fault. He opened with a 65kg snatch, something he has done in training very consistently. But his nerves must have gotten to him or he had an off day. I should have known better because his warm ups didn't go really well. He nailed a 62kg snatch in warm ups but missed 65kgs 3x. I will take the blame for that one. It was a learning experience for both of us.
I was able to earn a bronze in the 94s with a 210kg total. I would have liked to have done more but I battled a bout of stomach flu last week and lost 5kgs and 4 days training due to it. I snatched 90 and clean and jerked 120.
The highlights were obviously Lance Frye's 6 attempts. He went 5 for 6 only missing a 191kg clean. He snatched 130, 135 and 140, power snatching the 130 and 135. He cleaned 180, 185 and then attempted 191. His 185 jerk was a PR and that jerk looked much better than his 180. He racked the 191 clean but lost it on the way up. He may be well on his way to the Olympics, but the battle in the 77kg class will be phenomenal to watch at the Trials.
Ryan Marciniszyn lifted pretty well in spite of just peaking for Collegiates and then battling an injury. He still did a PR snatch of 90kgs in the 69kg class. The injury effects his jerk more than anything so he just power jerked 110kgs or so. He is an up and coming force in the 69kg class and one of the most knowledgable young men in the sport. A real class act.
I wish I knew all the names of the competitors and there totals, but I was so busy coaching and competing I didn't really take note of all I could have.
It was a great meet, an awesome atmosphere and a good experience for me as a coach. I did take 2 other young lifters to expose them to the sport and they were really impressed with the class of people in the sport.
I am doing what I can to get this sport to grow, I hope others are also. Take some young athletes under your wing and get them lifting in competition. Once they go, they are hooked!
