Larry Owings was his name. He beat Gable to 13-11 his sophomore year to win the 1970 national championship. It was Gable's last collegiate match. Owings went on to take second his next two years at NCAAs and was lost 7-1 to Gable at the '72 olympic trials. That was the only point scored on Gable that year. He won the olympics without being scored on. Owings also won the '69 senior freestyle nationals. So it wasn't just a fluke match, Owings had an outstanding wrestling career, it just wasn't quite the legandary status of Dan Gable.

With that being said, Gable wouldn't be my number one US Wrestler to coach as a weightlifter. He was a little lanky in my opinion. I would go for a guy built like a fire hydrant like Sammie Henson, Brandon Slay, or Cary Kolat. Or a guy known for crazy explosiveness like Stephen Neal, or Mo Lawal. Or maybe Danny Hodge who still crushes apples with one hand now in his sixties. Any elite wrestler has the work ethic and will to win, might as well pick the ones with the best build.
