Regis - Thanks for the kind words. Right back at you. I agree we agree much more than disagree.
I think most of us turn few, if any, away. Even if the lifter has low talent, hard work can make him competitive. Also, he/she may have a talneted brother/neighbor, etc., and they can always help in other ways.
My point is this. Let someone take the next 5000 who come through at random, and let me or you go and pick our top 10 male and females, grades 1-16, in any medium/large city, based on speed, body structure, knowing their siblings or parents, whatever. That would give us 320 vs. their 5000.
If they all stayed with it... a big IF.... I think our 320 would beat their 5000 in 5 years. But, we don't get the top 10 in most cases. Football and basketball do. Soccer doesn't, by and large. Tennis doesn't either, in most places.
To put it another way, a slow cheetah will outrun the fastest turtle. It is also more economical, timewise, if you are dealing only with those with potential. I assume that, to a large degree, that is closer to how it works in some countries, combined with the fact that there is much more of an an incentive for them to start and stay with it.
That may sound elitist; it is not meant to. I take all and charge ZERO. Many times when I see a kid who just looks muscular and athletic, he/she is already a star in some other sport. FB and BB coaches are not thrilled about their future stars being invoved in multiple sports; they want them for themselves, perhaps year round.
Such will it ever be. - Marty
