What about marathon running?

Just some thoughts.
There are millions of distance runners in America. For almost three decades we've had countless annual races across the country with over 10,000 competitors, sometimes even 20,000 competitors. With such a base we should dominate every major international competition in this event, but we don't.
The last Olympic gold in the marathon for America was 1972 for men and 1984 for women. And that 1984 event was the first time it was held for women.
I wonder if other countries believe that US marathon runners are heavy steroid users and therefore don't perform well in drug tested, international competitions?
Thank you,
Kim Goss
