Do you think nutritional knowledge has not changed in the past 20 years? I would disagree, I think we know a bit more than we did in the recent past.
Knowledge on drug use has improved too. There's more info on timing of drug administration and how to balance that with training. There are also new drugs that may have some performance benefit.
I agree with you, training technique has improved. But that tends to support my point, as time goes on we just learn more so we should do better.
Finally, there was an article circulated in the media that claimed humans are actually evolving more now than in the past. I did not read the source article so I take it with a grain of salt. But what if we are getting stronger? Hell, we all haul around more fat so maybe we are!
BTW I'm not knocking either lifter or claiming one to be superior to the other. I believe it can't be done, that you can't compare athletes from different eras in meaningful ways. Id do make one exception to that. Eddy Merckx is the best cyclist ever, Lance Armstrong can't carry his jockstrap!
