Hi Les, I think that was one of the first photo's we took of us during my early years of lifting. I think the picture was taken when I was playing football at that time and just before I turned 16 and lifted in my first meet. I had been doing some bodybuilding to beef myself up some for the lifting that was coming. I did a little O/L at that time working on my technique.
I remember the photo that Virgil took and we sent it to S & H and they kept the rights to the picture and did not return it. They made a mistake when they listed my younger brother. Actually he is older than I by some 18 months.
The weights on the grass were a mixture of Healthways and Weider with a regular 6' training bar. We widened the collars so we could get our snatch grip a little wider and put some oil under the sleeve so it would rotate a little more when snatching and cleaning. It was tough doing the lifts sometimes and my dad would give us hell about dropping them on the grass. We found a old door somewhere in the neighborhood and nailed some wood over it for our first platform and some extra wood so the weights would not drop on the grass. Each Saturday we would pretend we were lifting in a meet and total. We would have about 6-8 warm-ups on each lift and then take our three attempts. We were breaking our records almost every week. I would pretend them being World Record attempts and if I made it successful I would jump up and say a new world record has just been broken. We would spruce it up real good.
Sometimes the neighbors would come over and watch us. I guess they thought we were either nuts or they really believed us. At any rate they seemed to enjoy our display of enthusiasm and energy. Certainly we did not let them leave believing that we indeed were breaking world records. Ha Ha!
My hip is feeling a little better this morning and was able to get a good nights sleep.
Wish I could have gone to the Masters in Savannah. Was planning on going but this kick in the butt prevented me from going.
Take care and thanks Les for bringing back fond memories.
Check out the old car in the background. Can't remember if it was a old Dodge or Oldsmobile?
Joe
