Tracy,

First, great post!

I believe a print magazine helps draw traffic to the website, and the fact is that people still get excited about magazines and many people don’t like reading off a screen. It was thought that E-books would make paper books obsolete, but E-books have not taken off as they were expected – in fact, many people will order E-books and then print out a hard copy.

Yes, USA Weightlifting has little advertising, but the fact is there is little effort made to get advertising – they don’t even have a media kit! Advertising could pay for the cost of the magazine, and then some (perhaps even help pay for the website?). If print advertising didn’t make money, you would not see the number of magazines you see today on newsstands.

I like the idea of having back issues online as it creates a history of the sport and makes it easier on the media. I'm going to be writing an article about Kelly Lynch for BFS, and it's extremely time-consuming to find go through all my back issues of Weightlifting USA to find articles that discuss her accomplishments. There have also been some excellent training articles in Weightlifting USA so it would be nice to be able to easily access them.

To promote the sport or seek sponsorship, loaning out a magazine might be more effective that giving someone a website address. I've seen many excellent online magazines, but I have so many bookmarked that I often neglect to go back to them -- this problem doesn't happen with a hard copy magazine.

Perhaps the solution is to simply have both -- an online magazine and a print magazine for members? That's what we're doing at BFS. When we find that our print magazine does not generate the sales of our online publication, then it would probably make sense to stop printing a magazine.

Finally, I asked Wes quite some time ago that it would be a good idea to photos or video clips of athletes lifting, and he said they were coming.

Thank you,

Kim Goss
