Butch - I thought I posted before, but maybe I didn't. Your comment that you never regretted a single vote reminds me of the dog that didn't bark. Nothing means something.
Circumstances change, new facts emerge. Everyone I know who has served on BOD, city councils, school boards, etc., has votes he/she regretted. Dwight Eisenhower said his worst mistake was appoining Earl Warren to the Supreme Court. Look at Vietnam, Iraq, Katrina, etc. I would be concerned about anyone who said, "I never made a vote that I regret."
You vote based off the facts as you know them, and do your best. (The Red Sox traded Babe Ruth, for example.) No politician or school board member, etc., except you bats 1000.
You are more familiar with other NGB's than I am. Maybe on some the committees, such as coaching, etc., have more power and the BOD less. In WL, the BOD and the staff run our sport.
Do the BOD in the other sports with outsiders attend national meets? Do they have the same powers as our BOD?
I do not have yor old posts. If we were to elect non-WL people, I assume they would have to bring some expertise and acumen to the table, such as MBA's, etc. Otherwise, why appoint total strangers whose only plus is that they have never been involveed in lifting?
Maybe you can point out 4-6 NGB's where:
1. - The BOD have comparable power.
2. - Most or all of the NGB are people not involved in the sport, apst or present. More than 4-6 would be better.
I know some people in some sports, and maybe I can track down a few to get their input. In the meantime, maybe you can just list 6-8 non-WL people who you think are well qualified to be on the BOD, have no conflicts, and why they are well qualified and why they would be willing to serve, and what they would bring to the table. Since this has been hanging out there for a few years, I assume you have a ready-made list. Will they go to national meets so we can meet them? If they have no conflicts and are impartial, how is it that you know them and recokmend them, and think that they would serve for free? - Marty
