Weren't you on the BOD that hired Wes? From memory as an outsider I seem to remember 2 other highly qualified applicants that were defeated because they weren't "Weightlifting People".
Wasn't there an applicant that had been ED for another Olympic Sport that had doubled (or tripled) their Membership and sponsorship or something like that?
Wasn't there also a Sports Promoter (or some title like that) that had run major Competitions (Bowl Games?) and venues? Didn't he see this as an opportunity to get into Olympic Sports?
Remember USAW's History with EDs. Murray had Harvey, Jim gets elected and we get a new ED. Brian gets elected and he gets a new ED, too. And guess what? Dennis gets elected and he also gets a new ED. No, I'm not saying it's part of the election, but it's the reality.
If USAW had hired someone that wanted some Olympic Experience and during their tenure, they doubled membership and sponsorship, but left in 4 years, WOULD THAT BE SO BAD?
A few yeas ago a friend from CAL (GO BEARS!) made the brilliant assessment that CAL was a "Beginner School" for Head Football Coaches. CAL got a lot of first time Head Coaches or ones making their initial jump to the a Major Conference, the PAC-10. But we shouldn't get upset when every 3-5-? years they left for greener pastures. And he was right, it was a patterned that continued over and over again.
But with each change, there were benefits and positive changes to the program that lead to where they can now compete with other schools at a higher level and (hopefully) keep a Head Coach longer. My point being is that IF USAW were to hire someone who said that in 5 (10) years they see themselves as the President of the IOC, but they had most of what we needed, would that be bad?
And I believe that much of Wes' problems came from his lack of experience. Had USAW hired him after 3 or more years at the USOC, they would've trained him for the job. Instead, it looks USAW may have trained him for their job.
Also, I think you forgot the HUGE influence the President has on the ED. That has been the person that the 1st 3 EDs dealt with the most. I would assume it will happen with the next one.
