The leader? Hmmm...ABC might be called the leader in showing weightlifting, but only because it was almost never broadcast anywhere on U.S. ABC received the highest ratings in its history when they broadcast the 1970 worlds, ( of course, only the supers!), yet they responded by rarely showing lifting. Only the super class was shown the next year.

NBC did a superb job when it broadcast the Friendship Cup, from Tashkent with Morris Weissbrot providing commentary.

Prior to the Munich Olympics, I phoned the network and asked if they intended to air the weightlifting. I was assurted that every class would be shown. The reality was that only the super heavy highlights were aired...once again!

U.S. television was sorely lacking in weightlifting coverage...even when ratings went through the roof, the programmers didn't put two and two together and show more.
