You'll recall that a few years ago Utah went undefeated but didn't win the national championship. And so goes the argument for a playoff system.
I've also often wondered what formulas are used to determine pre-season polls. Is it a point system, such that you get three points if you have a senior quarterback, six points if you had the number one recruiting class four years earlier, and four points if you had a winning season the previous year?
I did read one article that looked at all the major sports magazines to see which were the most accurate over the past decade. But that also raised more questions, such as, do you go by who was most accurate the previous year, or for the past three years, or the past ten years?
One of the issues I have with college football is that there is always the temptation to play "follow the leader" when it comes to strength and conditioning. Whichever team won the previous year, you do what they did. I remember when I was a coach at the Air Force Academy and we had to have our football players do a month of aerobic dance because some major school (I believe Oklahoma) had used it the year they won a national championship. The hockey team got a lot of amusement value from watching that experiment.
Thank you,
