There should be no reason for sceptics to doubt the squatting ability of Redding...yes,400kg is formidable, but so was he. As I recall from that day in Montclair, he 'only' handled about 450lbs for reps in the squat, but it was so effortless, that it was like anyone else using an empty bar.

Rudolph Plukfelder told me that Rakhmanov squatted equally huge poundages and emphasized that the bar was 'bending like rubber'. These guys were monstrously strong by any standards. The European lifters didn't go for record singles, but used squats and pulls as adjuncts to their olympic lifts.

Morris Weissbrot was sent to Poland for the summer of 1965 and when he returned, made the comment that he saw the top lifters on the national team using squat poundages that would have equalled or exceeded the powerlifing records of that era.

I know a lot of people who were not around then seem to cast doubt on these training poundages, yet many of us either witnessed these things being done or heard from reputable witnesses who were on hand to see them done.
