I had the opportunity to wintess countless displays of "freaky" strength such as this on a regular basis in the University of Washington Football Weightroom in the early 90's, at the peak of their program. Some of those guys were simply amazing. Even today, the NCAA and NFL is littered with talent and athletes with freaky speed, strength, flexibility, drive, and desire.
If only a small fraction of these guys were to dedicate themselves to OL with the same intensity, the results would be mind-boggling.
Unfortunately, WL in the US remains an "amateur" sport, and as long as it takes a backseat to the US Professional sports, it will not draw the attention of top athletes like the Professional WL programs of other countries.
With that said, our "amateurs" appear to be getting a little more competitve on the world scene, even though they are facing professionals. But then who knows, there is always the Miracle on Ice... I still pull for our team, and hope our lifters don't lose hope in the face of what may seem to be insurmountable odds. Heart & desire can often (although not always) make up the difference.
