First let me say it is a rarity and a pleasure to have Sam Maxwell offer his opinion on the forum. Thank you
Next I offer an earlier post by Steve Zeigman to rebut:
"It's not always how much you lift that makes for greatness but rather how much you lift in comparison to the rest of the world. Bednarski was at the top of the world...senior world record holder. Michaels never set a senior world record and was never ranked number one in the world.
He was a new generation and each generation lifts more but Jeff fell below the worlds top and Bob was the worlds top!!!"
So we suffered a cultural disadvantage at some point that caused the separation in performance on the world level. I don't know how you quantify that so as to determine in a concrete way how the newer generation matches up. You could argue that the older generation would have done even better with present day training.
