Scott - I think comparing team and individual sports is off a little bit. In addition, when the llifters go to the OTC they have more time and resources to train. I would assume most train harder than they did at home. So, the training might be different for that reason alone.
I would also assume that when they went there they knew they were not going to be able to do just what they wanted all of the time.
Many of us... I dare so all of us.... encounter some of the same problems at home, or at least similar. Kids wwant to train a certain way, or train like so and so does, or go heavier, or train less, or take more time off, etc., etc. Parents become experts seemingly overnight.
As Matt alluded to, a coach cannot just be like a school monitor, i.e., you decide what you want to do and I will watch you and tell you how great you are, because if I don't, you will leave. (I am not saying that happened here; I really don't know much on Donnie.)
I hope it all works out. All of us who have been in the game lose lifters, or struggle when they want one thing and we want another. I think lifters go there with some idea of what they will be doing, or at least they should. I don't think Paul and Bob would mislead them.
Maybe there is blame on both sides, but I have been there as a coach, so I can understand where Paul might be coming from. I hope all turns out well. From my perspective, though, I think too many coaches (not just in WL but in all sports... see Allen Iverson, Barry Bonds, et al.)have too little control over their athletes and become more of an advisor than a coach. That is, they advise the athlete what to do and the athlete decides whether to take the advise or not. I AM DEFINITELY NOT SAYING THIS IS THE CASE WITH CASEY OR DON, BUT I THINK THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH MANY TOP LEVEL ATHLETES TODAY. - Marty
