My Road to Recovery

Hello Forum,
It's been about two years already since my last post on the forum - can't believe how time flies!!
My absence was brought about by my helping with the relief efforts for the Dec 2004 Tsunami victims and refugees in SE Asia, notably Thailand and Sri Lanka.
After about a year in Thailand (this past spring), I contracted malaria and lost quite a bit of weight, going from about 225 lbs down to about 165 lbs, on a 6ft 2in frame. I've managed to gain 10 pounds since then and am at about 175 right now. As they say, "no good deed goes unpunished", and this is my curse for helping with the relief effort.
About two weeks ago, on Nov 22nd, my first day back in the states since being in Asia, I stepped in the gym and was shocked to find out just how weak and depleted I've become - I was in a state of total denial on my real condition up to that time. Walking up to a bar on the platform loaded with 154 lbs, I had trouble cleaning it and had to push press it to get it overhead. After that, I fizzled out on the tread mill - in less than two minutes, my legs turned to jello and I had to stop. Even though I'm an "old man" at 65 now, my 63rd birthday was celebrated by benching (raw) 405 lbs and running a mile in 6 mins - 40 secs, all while weighing a natural 225 lbs. Obviously, I am now just a shell of my former self from just two short years ago.
This predicament is quite depressing for me to say the least, and is magnified each time I either step on a scale or walk past a mirror.
To members of this forum, I'm sending out an SOS! I humbly ask for your input on any general training routines that you've found to be the most successful for quickly building (regaining) strength and body weight. I need all the help I can get.
Regards
Maurice
