As someone who has lived in two separate Muslim countries and who speaks three major Muslim languages -- not counting English
-- I have never heard, studied, or encountered the idea that a star of any kind is "offensive" in Islam.
Anyone who suggested that the star was hung in that way in order not to offend Muslims -- whom I do not imagine to be a major constituency in the audience of a U.S. weightlifting contest -- was most likely having you on, or, on a more charitable interpretation, was passing on some kind of urban legend, perhaps based on the national flag of Pakistan.
After all, this is a time in U.S. history in which you could accuse Muslims of killing Jesus and 35% of the country would believe you. Muslims can be blamed for a lot of things, but I think it is safe to say that Satan worship at U.S. weightlifting competitions is not one of them.
