an "insider" report from the Asian Games

A friend of mine lives in Doha and is now a volunteer worker at the Asian Games. She is involved with the doping control. She sent me this email today. (She is not into weighlifting but her boyfriend, also volunteering, is.)

Li Ping (Chinese Female Lifter) won the gold yesterday and I had to escort her to the doping control station! A HK lifter won the bronze in the same event....she is teeny...tiny.
Today a Female Chinese Lifter won gold and broke the world's record for lifting. I was in the Doping control room when she practically fainted. She was okay though...and even managed to give in her sample.
The Chinese lifters seem to be starting a lot higher than their competitiors...but as the weight categories are increasing the differences in the starting weights is getting narrower...with China still starting high.
I imagine that China will have absolutely no postitive doping tests for the Asian games. Why? There seems to be a Chinese person..from Beijing in EVERY doping control station. Does that seem odd to you? It does to me. It kept me awake last night...thinking about it.
The Chinese coaches are hilarious. They are in the warm up rooms staking their claims to lifting stations (don't know the official name) by perching themselves in the middle of the platforms on chairs. Whatever it takes...I guess.
The PRK coach...not so hilarious. He is difficult and pretends not to understand what is going on. ...he is probably under a little bit of pressure.
Did you see that guy from Vietnam with his hair shaped into a spike at the front...he didn't get gold..but he is a Marketers dream. So far the Thai lifters are the most friendly.
Oh and check this out...the guys plating (is that the name...the guys that are loading the bars...oh maybe they are called loaders) are...get this..the weightlifting team from Bangledesh. Yep. Wild huh? Even the coach...is here...and all they are doing is loading the bars. Nice guys...fantastic...makes me want to move to Bangledesh!
Leigh went crazy when some famous Chinese lifter (male)...showed up. He even got his picture taken with him. Leigh says he has a picture of the guy at home in Canada. I don't remember his name (I know...I'm not much help). Oh and Leigh shook Rezazadeh's hand.
Leigh is so absolutely thrilled to be there and meeting everyone. It is great to see.
Leigh told me that you wouldn't believe the number of athletes that are being tested for doping control. There are 4-5 per class. ...and it is done by ranking...it is so very hard to keep track of the athletes and which position they are in....so we can catch them before they leave.
Oh and the Chinese lifters and handlers seem to get a little nervous when they realise that I can speak Chinese. Hmmmm I wonder why?
Okay that is all I have today. I'm sure I will write more tomorrow.
