Geoff,

The power of the mind! Does the reality of a world record having been done drive lifting up to a new world record?

Could it be that Dr. Pete George did not do what the lifters in the 70's when he lifted back in the 50's, because he could not imagine himself doing that much? However, if he was lifting in the 70's he would have done that much more because he would have been able imagined himself doing it?

You Wrote: "At the Gettysburg Worlds, in '78, I had the chance to meet Dr. Pete George and we spoke about the great lifting being done by guys like Rigert and Vardanian. I asked Pete what he thought he would be doing if he were lifting in the 70s instead of the 50s. His reply was that he would be doing world record lifts just the same, since you adapt to the requirements of what is necessary at the time. This was said with complete confidence and not in a boastful or offhand manner. I had never really thought about it until then."

This seems to be what he is implying.

Dave Sheppard is another kind of animal. Dave was a modern day type physical athlete lifting in a olden day period of time.

I think it more likely that todays champions could adapt to do what yesterdays champions did then it is that yesterdays champions could adapt to do what todays athletes are doing. i.e. more likely that Raz would C & J what Anderson did in old style than that Anderson would C & J what Raz does in mordern style.
