Hi Don Cundy III,

I am not certain my memory is accurate on this, but as I recall, your Dad was the first to pull an 800lb deadlift. If he wasn't the first, he was certainly among the first to do so. The poundages he handled were unheard of in those days. I know he pulled much more later on. His deadlifts are still very impressive even by today's standards.

I remember one time when the old T.V. show "Hawaii 50" was shooting on location at the Central Y.M.C.A. Gym and your Dad was training. He was squatting heavy that day and was doing some impressive poundages. Within a short period of time, all of the cast and crew were in the weight room watching your Dad train. They completely stopped filming. They were in awe of his strength and physique. I told some of the cast that your Dad was a powerlifting legend, national super heavy champion etc... The actor that played Kimo on the show wanted to talk to your Dad but said he was too intimidated however, he came back one or two other times to watch your Dad train.

Your Dad was very disciplined with his diet. I never saw anyone eat so much canned tuna, rice and powdered milk. I guess that does explain how he was a low body fat super heavy weighing 295 to 300 lbs. Extraordinary!!

Terry
