The use of technology in either context actually demonstrates the conflict between necessity versus adornment.

For people who enjoy jumping over canyons and such, the machine is integral to the process and technology is the chief catalyst. Nobody can jump over Snake River Canyon without a motorcycle rocket - just ask Evel.

For people who enjoy lifting heavy objects however, muscle is integral to the process and technology is only a crutch - a money-making, ego-blandishing and performance-enhancing aspect of our sport - but still a crutch.
