Mike,

Of course Jon was plenty fast as he excelled at the discus, to a lesser degree in the shot put, and was noted for a fine 100 yd. dash time and shorter sprints.

But, your point is well made that in the context of the speed related to dropping under snatches and cleans, he was a bit lacking. I think the reason for this is that he was obviously stronger than the better Olympic lifters he lifted against, but when a man is first a powerlifter, my guess is that they rely on power much more than technique. So, Jon most likely didn't know when to stop pulling and start accelerating under the bar, issues like that.

Big arms are an issue... I don't recall his biceps being all that large, but man, did he have large forearms. You know, Jon wasn't really all that big-boned or broad-shouldered to begin with, another interesting point about him I think.

Big arms can create real issues racking a heavy clean. Phil Grippaldi managed around this issue with those big hams he had for biceps, but that was very unusual.

And, arms like that for an Olympic lifter in any weight-class other than the unlimited supers meant bodyweight "wasted" that would have been better situated in the quadriceps or back muscles.

We ran Jon down for a throwing career article about a year ago, then when I went back to set up the interview, we could never find him again??? Emails to his webpage, a largely inactive and unmanaged site I think, never worked.

Cheers! Brad
