In Response To: Cole also pressed 430- snatched 340- c&j 430 (Scott Tusic)

Scott, he sure did, didn't he?

At the 1972 Olympic Trials, Jon Cole didn't fare so well. He pressed 407, then snatched 313.5, both lifts a bit off his bests in earlier meets. Then Jon bombed out in the clean and jerk for a no total. He used sort of rough power styles in his 3 lifts, not as polished as the very best O-lifters.

Another thrower won the meet... big Ken Patera, a shot putter.

It was around this time, perhaps a year or two earlier, that Jon Cole publicly challenged Paul Anderson to a 6 lift contest to claim what he thought was his: credit as the true world's strongest man. Anderson had his supporters, Terry Tood for example, but others sided with Cole. I think it would have been an interesting competition... if both men were in their primes.

One final thing about Cole. He had sort of a reputation for making his big lifts in home meets. I actually don't think that was altogether fair and I think some of it had to do with his missing a meet to face John Kuc, but I have long forgotten the details. Too, in his very heavy deadlifts, he was criticized for dragging over bent legs once it passed his knees. Still, what a moose. I saw him lift in two weight classes. He always went for broke.

Cheers! Brad
