Jason,

By 1968, Cole was bench pressing 485, not far off the world record of 527 or thereabouts. He squatted 740 and deadlifted 750 around that time. My guess is you could back off about 200 to 250 lbs. from his p/l total and that would be about right, say, as a senior at ASU.

He started ASU in 1963, so I guess his spring track seasons would have been '64, '65, '66, '67. I think he placed high in the discus in only one NCAA Outdoor meet, second or third place. He never scored any NCAA points as a shot putter.

His claim to fame in the discus occurred in 1969 when he beat the great L. Jay Silvester to win the National Discus championships by an inch. Silvester was a many-times world record holder and silver medalist at the 1972 Olympics.

Cole would be considered short for a thrower, just about right for a powerlifter and weightlifter.

A great all-round athlete, for sure.

***The kids today are much stronger. Christian Cantwell was interviewed after the 2008 Olympic Trials recently after he made the team, and he is incline pressing 280 kilos for 2 reps. Of course, he is much bigger than Cole ever was...
