Sergeant Tirplett,
I enjoyed reading your post about "handing out trophies like candy." . . . As you point out, there are reasons for doing this, and reasons for not doing this. . . .
However, I'm not sure that it is not just a simple question of "numbers" . . . Like, if there are 12 weight classes spread over 5 age groups, then that alone means 60 categories. . . and if your meet has only 30 lifters, then they will be spread pretty thin over those categories. . . and in my case, I'm always alone in my age-group/weight-class . . So whether I total 300 or 3,000, it makes no difference. I'm gonna get whatever prize is available, whether it is a trophy, or a record, or whatever. . . . And when ya start factoring in categories like "geared" or "RAW" or Special Olympians, or Fire/Police, then the lifters get spread even thinner over more categories . . . . And ya can't blame Meet Promoters for trying to attract as many Lifters as possible. . . .
Plus, the lifters are spread out even thinner over a bazillion Federations. . . . .
It's just math, and that is just how it works out . . . . :-\
Now, with National or World meets in large Federations, ya might be able to attract 300 lifters for 60 categories. which would average 5 lifters per category. . . In meets like this, then there would be some "real" competition, as some posters like to say. . . . But in a Local, or even State competition, I just don't see those "numbers" happening. . . .
Sarge, thank you kindly for your time, and I wish you the best!
Ride safe,
Jim![]()
