In Response To: Deadlift advice (Douglas Heeren)

As you know from your "sumo" experience, the wider you can get your feet apart, the shorter the vertical distance ya have to pull. . . .

With your feet apart, you can "sit down" more in between your feet and that keeps your back more vertical, which puts more "leg" into your lift. . . . . The closer together you get your feet, the more you have to bend over to grasp the bar, which puts more "back" into the lift. . . . . .

What I feel is best for me is to grasp the bar with a "natural" width between the hands, (whatever feels most comfortable), and then place my knees just inside my elbows, knees right up against elbows. . . Point your toes out at an angle so that your knees will travel directly out over your toes. Your thighs, knees, shins, and ankles should all move along the same plane to avoid twisting the knee joints. . . . . . .

Also, with "regular" (non-sumo) deadlifting, there is a shoulder "lock-out" issue. . . . The judging that I've seen like to see your shoulders squared back like you were "standing at attention." I think that the "squared-shoulders" is more of an issue in "regular" deadlifting than it is with "sumo" deadlifting. . . . .

Anyhow, I hope this helps. . . . . . Of course, experimentation will determine what works best for you, since relative back-to-leg strength factors in, length of leg vs length of back, leverages . . . all these will factor in to determine what is best for you . . .

Ride safe,
Jim
