Testing if performed by referees and sent to a lab cost approx. $75/test. Or more than the entry fee. To properly collect 1 person takes approx. 1/2 hour. In a two hundred lifter meet that is 100 man hours of effort. This would require 50-100 judt to test at the end of a meet , or 5-10 testing full time during the meet.
Then there are the legal issues. The most common (and best) defense is "chain of custody errors". No matter who experienced a ref. is, they are not considered drug testing experts.
What we have done in the AAU is partner with a third party house that does the NCAA testing. Tests run approx. $200 each, due to labor, travel etc. Approx. 1/3 of our tests are in meet and 2/3 OMT. The selection criteria is objective and has passed "muster" in various courts of law.
