Garry Frank's APF Masters, Teen, and Junior Nationals in Baton Rouge, La. this weekend was a fantastic meet! Lavish ball room, huge space, great equipment, excellent judging, and huge lifts and performances galore! The #'s put up by the Teens, Juniors, Subs and Masters were nothing short of mind-boggling! Some off of the top of my head were Al Mehan's 2501 308 submaster total and Craig Stutes falling just short of toppling him on his final DL...epic battle. Greg Damminga's 848 WR squat and WR 2071 total at 275 M 45-49 and wife Debbie's 402 WR DL. I think she had other WR's here also. 8-10 lifters opening at over 1000 on squats! Toby Irby taking Best Lifter Submasters going (I believe) over 10 times bodyweight at 242. Many many more...too many to remember at the moment! Here's how I did:

I did the 275 (dropped 12 pounds over the last week or so and was back to 285 by Sunday). I was in the Fullpower and B.O. (50-54) so me and Roger finally got to compete against each other. I felt aweful warming up for squats and struggled with 685 backstage! I went and dropped my opener by 100 lbs. to 705. Unexplainably it felt fine on the platform, deep and fast as was 755. I went back to my planned opener of 804 for my 3rd. I setup good and it felt light enough but as I started down I blew out a vessel in my nose and blood started flowing down my face and I guess it broke my focus and I lost my tightess and started shaking all the way down. I blew it up strong and solid but I was afraid I didn't hit depth and I was right. About an inch the judges said (the judging was excellent all day!). So as it turned out I'm glad I lowered the opener!

Oddly I felt better and better as the day went on. I felt very good during Bench warmups. I never got a rep down good in training with the new 2 ply Katana so I planned to stay in the 1 ply. This worked out well. I opened with a WPC WR and APF Am. Rec. 568 and had the shirt a little low and had to try and roll my wrist forward to touch and dumped it on my stomach. Just as it was about to dump the blood skirted out of my nose again and my training partner Chris Sanford, who was in the 40-44 220's; said "I thought you were dead"! (I hope the photographer got a good picture of it!) I took the weight again and raised the shirt just a little and nailed it with a face and eye full of blood as it blew again! By now I was playing it up a little as the crowd seemed to love it! I took 600 on my 3rd (1st time since the surgery in a meet) and again, with a face full of blood; got it solidly! (This was a great confidence booster and releif!/No Pain!). I took a 4th with 622 and it was the best of the presses I think but my right hand dipped down right before locking (left locked). John Ewing(who handed off)said I bumped the right upright right near the top with the bar and that's when it bounced forward and dipped on that side. (Rough luck but still a big confidence booster for later meets).

I felt better warming up for deads than I can remember in a long time (DL training hadn't gone well this cycle). I opened real safe at 568 and it went up real easy. 590 on the 2nd felt even easier, so I took 611 to give me the APF Am. 275 50-54 total record (needed 1966). It came off the floor real good and was moving well but it started rolling out of my left hand about mid thigh and I couldn't hold on to finish!(very frustrating!) After a couple of minutes to get over the missed DL and Record I was very pleased with the results on the day, and with the 1945 total I am steadily making progress back to over 2000 again!

I won the 275 Full-power and finished 2nd to Roger Ryan (633) in the Bench Only (no disgrace against a bencher of his caliber). I can't wait til me and Roger get to go at it again...hopefully WPC World's at West Palm Beach, Fl. in November! Congrats Roger!...this time! LOL!

This was a great meet by Garry Frank and company with fantastic lifts and totals by so many lifters. It doesn't get any better than this meet! Great job everybody who was there and was envolved!!!
