If you only have 20-30 or so top athletes, you are bound by to have a weight class dominated by 1 guy. Yes Coan was above the SHW of the day but as the talent pull increases, so will competition. You are right about the competition of today and even the strongest have to work hard just to keep up with the new guys.

I do believe that Coan would still be one of the best if he came along in this era, but I do feel that he would have more competition and not be so dominant.

We also have a larger group of foreign athletes that just focus on PLing and are showing signs of domination world wide. I only remember of a few instances where foreign lifters came here and dominated the U.S. lifters but now it happens regularly here and abroad.
