I would hardly call my results little but I will say I have been lifting for 28 years and my diet as well as other things are dialed in. You are right to err on the side of caution. Another thing people don't take into account is timing,and overtraining. One way to tell if you are over training is to check your resting pulse rate when you know your not overtrained upon awaking in the morning. If after you been training for a while your waking pulse goes up more than 10 beats per minute then there is a chance you have been overtraining. Also if your not eating high quality meals as soon as possible after training your missing the window of opportunity to grow!
