Nick, I played against Mike from 1971,72, & 73 when I was going to Magnolia (RB/LB) and Mike played running back for John Marshall. He also wrestled for them (JM) and manhandled everyone. A true Ohio Valley sports legend. He was a beast of a player.
Then I went to Salem College and played for now West Virginia Athletic Director Ed Pastilong and Mike went to West Liberty. Salem College is where Dave Jeffreys met up with me and Mike Wolf. As a matter of fact, Dave put together a Salem College P/L team and we won the West Virginia Collegiate Meet (1975).
Also I played against Maurice Smith from Cadiz High school. Maurice went on to powerlifting greatness producing large numbers, 800+ Squat, upper 400's in the B/P, and I believe near 800 in the D/L. Maurice(242 Drug Free Champion) and I became friends years back. I officiated football when his two sons played at St. Mary's High School.
Pretty impressive class of future powerlifters within our high school conference when you add future 114 World Champion, World Record holder, and Multi-Senior National Champion Charles (Chucky) Dunbar to the list. By the way, Tim Swords and I discovered Chuck Dunbar at our basement gym and took him to Luke Iams because Luke didn't believe that a 17 yr. old wrestler weighing 98 pounds could B/P 225 without any support gear and using those small holed 50 lb. york plates with a standard 7' exercise bar.
At that time, Kenny McDowell had the world record at 114 class with a 270 B/P and Luke flipped when we showed Chuck off. Chuck Dunbar was in awe of John Marshall's wrestling team and Swords and I would travel to watch Cain rip his opponents apart. He had a physique that intimidated many athletes and could back it up. Also a true gentleman onand off the field. When we played Cadiz, Ohio during my senior year, Maurice was their running back at 185. He looked like a Willie Parker of the Steelers some 28 years ago.
Have a good day Nick, Hillbilly.
