Just thinking a bit about RDC's comments that the top ten in the deadlift were higher then, some time in the 1980s, than now, and the reason... there may be several.

But, the one that comes to mind is sort of a cross-over from what happened in the Olympic Lifts. When the press was eliminated from the 3-lift competition after 1972, the snatch lift, as a percentage of the clean and jerk, really ramped up to a much higher percentage level.

Similarly, my guess is one reason the deadlift may be generally lower now, and certainly compared to the progress in the other two lifts over the years, is that the bench press is so much more of a focal point in lifting and a much bigger contributor to a winning total than it was years ago.

In the old days, a guy might get behind in the bench press and make it up in the deadlift... now, in some classes and with some equipment, the bench presses are heavier than the deadlifts. So, a big bench press has greater value.

Just using RDC himself as an example and without remembering how all the match-ups went, RDC often trailed Rick Gaugler who was a humongous bench presser and could jump out to a big lead over most everyone, then the big squatters and deadlifters would reel them in over the whole course of a meet, or at least try to.

So, again, one reason for the ratio shift is the bench press is so much larger a contributor to the total nowadays... but I would defer to RDC and others for their expert opinions.

Cheers! Brad
