After watching some squat videos from the UPA nationals, I hae succumb to the notion that Powerlifting has changed to the point of no return. I don't know if we had it right, back in the old days, or if you have it right in the new days. What I do know is this; the idea of parallel, or below parallel has forever been altered. My 16 year old squats, "old school" deep and his football teamates "new school" deep. I have to say that I am more impressed with his below parallel 315 then I am with his teamated way above parallel 405 but that is me. I seem to be in the minority as all the 1/4 squatters on his team high five each other after a life threatening charge at weights much to heavy for them.
I have come to the understanding that this is what the sport is now, so I should either embrace this way or hang em up. I can see where the other old dudes would be bitter about their records falling to a different set of rules and circumstances but I guess that this has happened to most other athletes in other sports as well. Hell, I remember when Jim Brown's rushing records were broken by guys that played in 4 more games per year and we all celebrated these achievments. Guys and Gals, the sport has changed and either we change with the sport or we risk being the dinosaurs. Of course, walking away with your integrity isn't that bad of an idea, is it?
