A little deadlift story....

When I was 16 I attended a USPF meet in Buffalo, NY called "The Queen City Open" it was held in may of 1987 at the Buffalo Waterfrotn school & put on by Tim Danahy. The part of the meet that is still the most vivid to me was the battle at 198. It was between Steve Preston, a great bencher from the area (a 3 lift lifter as well, who later benched 500 @ 181 in a single-poly blast shirt)& Leon Humphrey, another great lifter from the Auburn, NY area. Steve was short & compact in stature, heavily muscled upper body & a fairly balanced lifter & was coached by the great Dan Mlodozeniec (633 @232 world record). Leon came with his group (don't let the owl get you!) they both squatted 600, bear in mind this was in the days of jack stand squat racks & single-poly suits, maybe a z-suit or a marathon supersuit, infact I knew Steve pretty well & I know he wore a Titan single-ply suit & standard inzer groove briefs. Then the bench press...Steve benched 450, seeing he probably raw benched 430 at that time it tells you what shirts gave then, Leon benched 370 with very long arms. Then the deadlift, going into this Steve had a good lead. Steve was a sumo puller & pulled a solid 600, very good with short arms. Leon, what can be said about Leon...this was his baby, the deadlift...tall, long arms, long legs...Leon pulled 720 like it was nothing, stiff-leg with knee wrpas, never understood the significance of the knee wrpas because he barely bent his legs anyway, but he totalled 1690 to Steve's 1650. It all came down to the deadlift, leon probably could not triple 315 in training in the bench raw, I know Steve could triple 405 because I saw it, but at a meet...the best deadlifter always has the ace, that will never change.
