If one looks back at the great bench pressers of the 80's & 90's you will see that the vast majority of benc world record holders were, in fact 3 lift powerlifters. Chris Confessore pulled 672 at 198 with very short arms & conventional stance...pretty good, so much for technique...I guess he just decided to get brutally strong on his deadlift. Dan Mlodozeniec, 242 world record holder in 1985...722 deadlift in a singlet. Jeff Magruder, Kenny Patterson, George Halbert, Rick Weil, & many more...the real truth is not "us" vs. "them", but the shame of it is the bench only guys are missing out on so very much fun & personal fulfillment. I have friend who was a very good bench presser, 480 at 198 & we harped on him to become a full lifter...he resisted for a long time, but finally gave in & shortly thereafter unfortunately severely injured his shoulder limiting his bench press ability to this day, but what did he find out in the bargain? That he was a heck of a deadlifter, pulling 655 weighing about 190 in the gym with much more to come. His arms were so big & muscular, probably from all the benching that we never realized that they were fairly long & he had a very short sumo stroke...he is still a 3 lift powerlifter doing what he can in the bench & squatting in the mid to upper 6's & pushing that deadlift towards 700. What if he had not become a full lifter & injured that shoulder? He may have given up & quit, but he is gunning for his 181 elite...there is not ranking system for bench press...no class 1, no master & no elite. Unless you have a physical limitation that prevents you from squatting & deadlifting every bench only lifter should give a full meet a try, get a decent suit & wraps & people to train with & give it a try.
